Report Dated 05/07/98
Fly count: No more Medflies have been trapped. Our count is stable (though the actual number has gone up by by three or four, due to a counting error on the day the 900+ were counted from at the primary site). I believe the grand total is at 1306.
Malathion bait applications: Ground bait applications continue in the areas not covered by aerial application.
The next scheduled aerial application is for Sunday morning, pending approval by EPA. That area will include both the areas treated on May 3rd and May 5th - consolidating the treatment areas into one. This will keep us at one day for aerial treatment.
Environmental Monitoring: Analytical results are beginning to come in from our lab - the following represent water samples (these are all I have results for at this time):
The following lakes were sampled: Umatilla, Gibson, South Twin Lake, Enola, Palm, Geneva, East Lake, and Crescent Lake. All pre-application samples were below detections levels for both malathion and malaoxon. Post application results for malathion are:
Umatilla ND (below detection level) Gibson 6.6 ppb South Twin 0.56 ppb Enola ND Palm 16 ppb Geneva 2.0 ppb East Lake 0.13 ppb Crescent 0.26 ppbNOTE: Our minimum detection level is 0.1 ppb, and our practical level of quantitation is 0.3 ppb. The East Lake (0.13 ppb) and Crescent Lake (0.26 ppb) numbers are between the two, which means that analytically, we're sure that malathion is there, but we're not confident that the levels are exactly as calculated - they are more than 0.1 and less than 0.3 ppb.
All post-application samples were below detection limits for malaoxon.
These results fall within ranges seen in Tampa, for "significant" or "sensitive" water bodies (protected by a buffer).
Health Monitoring: Sorry, I don't have a tally for total calls thru today. I am aware of one call from an individual outside the treatment area, with health concerns/questions. The Health Department is aware of this call and is following up.
The Public Health Advisory Committee will be meeting as scheduled via conference call tomorrow.
Medfly DNA: My understanding is that the DNA is consistant with the DNA of the flies trapped in Tampa. I will try to obtain more precise information - whether we can pinpoint these flies any further than that.
Command Center: A site has been found in Mt. Dora. I will give you the address and phone numbers in the next update.
