Report Dated 05/13/98
MANATEE COUNTY Aproximately 29 flies have been trapped in about 14 sites, all within an area of about 1 square mile. Fruit is being cut to determine if larvae are present, and none have been reported thus far (reported mid afternoon).
FDACS, USDA and EPA participated in a conference call, and approval for application of ground bait stations is being sought. Ground treatment will begin tomorrow, pending EPA approval and waiver by property owners from a 24 hour pre-notification. The anticipated treatment area will be approximately one square mile. At this time I do not have a map or the boundaries of the treatment area. I will try to get that out as soon as possible tomorrow. Sterile fly production has already been increased, to accomodate the possible release over the Umatilla area. I am uncertain as to whether there will be sufficient quantities to cover both areas.
A public meeting in Bradenton has been scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, May 16, 1998 at the Manatee High School Auditorium 1000 32nd Street W.
Local governments, the health department, veterinarians, etc have been notified.
Water samples have been/will be taken by both Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)/Tampa and USDA from the Manatee River (pre-application samples). As in previous programs, additional samples will be taken post application as well.
UMATILLA PROGRAM
As far as I know, the fly count is stable - however, I did not check
today, given the situation in Manatee County.
Environmental Monitoring:
DEP/Orlando has provided a very preliminary report - post
application
bio-assessment of Gibson, South Twin, East and Crescent Lakes look pretty
good. Visual observation revealed no massive die-off. However, please
note that laboratory results are needed for an accurate comparison between
pre and post applications.
Post application for this week (5/11/98):
Lake Umatilla BDL (below detection limits) Lake Gibson 2.5 ppb Lake South Twin 3.4 ppb
Detection limits unchanged (1 ppb)
Health Monitoring: No report
