06/04/98 - Bradenton and Umatilla Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Provided by Dr. Marion Fuller
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

Report Dated 06/03/98

Bradenton

Four more flies were detected today, bringing the total flies trapped to 542 since the initial find on May 12th.

There are now 2540 traps in service in the area - 2293 Jackson, 86 McPhails, and 161 yellow panel traps.

The regulated area was expanded June 1 to 106 square miles, taking in an area east of I-75, in response to the fly reported a few days ago (northeast of the earlier finds in Palmetto).

My apologies to everyone for an error in an earlier update concerning the request for aerial application from USDA to EPA. I reported that a request had been made to EPA on Monday of this week - it is my understanding that, in fact, the request was submitted today. I will try to confirm that for you. I expect EPA will respond as soon as they have had an opportunity to review it. There have been discussions between the agencies, which should assist EPA.

Environmental Monitoring: No report

Health Monitoring: Manatee County Health Department has received a total of 16 calls - 4 of which reported health effects/concerns. The Health Department is following up on these calls. In addition the Tampa Poison Information Center has recieved 4 calls, 1 of these concerned possible health effects. Again, DOH is following up. Of the 5 cases reporting health effects, respiratory symptoms were reported in four cases; gi symptoms in four cases, one case reported eye effects; and one case reported irritability. (Four of the five cases involved symptoms from more than one body system.)

Sterile Release: Sterile fly release continues according to schedule. Again - flies are only being released outside the proposed treatment area.

The fly count is stable at 1314. Ground crews continued to make applications within the "buffer" areas surrounding sensitive sites.

There are 4018 traps deployed in this program: 3380 Jackson, 540 yellow panels, 206 McPhail and 50 IPTs.

NOTE: I will be at the public meeting in Manatee County tomorrow night; and afterwards will be on the road to Gainesville where I have another meeting early Friday morning. I will try to get a BRIEF update out before the weekend, so you will know what transpires tomorrow, and any details regarding EPA approval/denial of aerial bait treatments. If you have not heard from me, please feel free to call the Department's Helpline for information regarding the application. That number is 1-888-397-1517.
