06/10/98 - Bradenton and Umatilla Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Provided by Dr. Marion Fuller
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

Report Dated 06/09/98

Bradenton

Another fly was trapped yesterday, this one also in the core, bringing the fly count up to 547 since the initial find on May 12th. Ground bait treatment and fruit stripping are ongoing.

There are 3090 traps in service: 2691 Jackson, 86 McPhail, and 313 yellow panel traps.

The first aerial bait treatment is scheduled for tomorrow night, as previously reported - to begin around 10:00 pm. The aircraft (two DC3s) will be operating out of the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport. The treatment should be complete by around 5:00 am, with no weather or mechanical complications. I am attaching a bit map of the application zones - and will send another one out tomorrow morning that may be of a little better quality. As before, if you save the file to disk, you should be able to call it up in any standard word processor. If you have questions, please call me.

The FDACS Helpline will be operational tomorrow morning, and throughout Wednesday night, closing for two hours between 6:00 am and 8:00 am Thursday morning. That number is 1-888-397-1517. Please direct all calls regarding the aerial treatment program to that number.

Environmental Monitoring: No report

Health Monitoring: To confirm yesterday's report, Blake Hospital and Manatee Hospital will be excluded from aerial application - with a 300 meter buffer, as is being used for identified water bodies.

The DOH Hotline will be operational 24 hours tomorrow - opening at their normal time Wednesday morning (8:30 am, I believe) and closing at 5:30 pm on Thursday. Their number is 941-748-0747, ext 1340. Please direct all human health concerns to that number.

NOTE: I heard that a suit was filed at 4:30 this afternoon in federal court, naming EPA and USDA, to prevent aerial bait treatment. I have been out of the office during the afternoon, and was not able to confirm this. If there is to be a delay in the scheduled treatment, I will let you know ASAP.

Umatilla

No flies have been detected since May 19th. 1314 flies have been detected since their first detection on April 27th.

This weekend will be the final aerial bait treatment, provided no more flies are trapped.

Environmental Monitoring:

Correction - I erroneously indicated both the MDL and PQL for our water data was 0.1 ppb. (Shame on me!) The PQL is unchanged at 0.3 ppb. (Thanks to those of you who noted that!)

Health Monitoring: No report
