06/17/98 - Bradenton and Umatilla Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Provided by Dr. Marion Fuller
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

Report Dated 06/16/98

Bradenton

No flies were detected yesterday, and the early report for today is also clear, keeping the count stable at 553.

The next aerial bait treatment is scheduled for tomorrow night, June 17, beginning around 10:00 pm. Ground crews continue with treatments in buffered areas, and commercial crews continue to strip fruit in the core.

3232 traps have been deployed: 2862 Jackson, 86 McPhail, and 284 yellow panel traps.

Environmental Monitoring:
(I have been out of the office today, so I only have drift card data to report. I expect to have our water data included in tomorrow's update. Please forgive the delay.)

The following results are from drift cards which are placed in buffered zones to monitor deposition of malathion-bait during the treatment of June 10, 1998.

Note: We attempt to place drift cards at 50 meter intervals from waters edge throughout the buffer zone, and 50 meters into the treated area. This may not be possible, due to terrain, buildings, lack of accessibility, etc. Also, on occasion, drift cards will be "lost" - picked up by a passerby, animal, etc. (samplers often can't stay within sight of all cards)

Health Monitoring:
No report

Umatilla

No more flies have been detected.

Intensive trapping continues with 5493 traps in service: 3552 Jackson, 438 Zellwood, 1248 yellow panel, 205 McPhail, and 50 IPT traps.

Environmental Monitoring: Pending

Health Monitoring: No report

NOTE: I had several questions about the last Bradenton Health Monitoring Report - regarding what is meant by "lost to follow up". As indicated in the report, DOH (Tallahassee or the County Hotline) records each callers name, phone number, and pertinent information about the call. Those callers who identify symptoms that they believe are associated with the malathion-bait treatments are called back by the DOH pesticide surveillance program, to obtain more detailed medical information. "Lost to Follow Up" may be a caller who declines to provide information, or one whom DOH is unable to contact (incorrect phone number, left town, etc).
