Report Dated 06/25/98

Bradenton

No new flies were detected yesterday, keeping the total count for this program at 553. The last fly was trapped 6/14/98.

Aerial bait treatment was postponed last night due to rain. Treatment will be made tonight at 10:00 pm, weather permitting. The media have been kept informed...

There are currently 3540 traps deployed: 3171 Jackson, 86 McPhail, and 283 yellow panel traps.

Environmental Monitoring: The following results are from drift monitoring samples collected during the second aerial bait treatment of 6/17-18.

Health Monitoring: Breakdown of calls received so far this week:
6/22 15 calls received by Manatee CHD w/ health concerns/complaints
153 calls total to Manatee CHD since 6/1 w/ health concerns/complaints
6 calls total to Tampa PIC (Poison Information Center)
8 calls total to DOH/Tallahassee
167 grand total of calls reporting health complaints/concerns to DOH, MCHD, and PIC
6/23 8 calls received by Manatee CHD w/ health concerns/complaints
0 to Tampa PIC and DOH/Tallahassee
6/24 2 calls as of 11:00 am received by Manatee CHD w/ health concerns/complaints
0 to Tampa PIC and DOH/Tallahassee
6/25 0 calls to Manatee CHD, Tampa PIC and DOH/Tallahasee w/ health concerns/complaints
164 total calls to Manatee CHD since June 1 w/ health concerns/complaints
6 calls total to Tampa PIC
8 calls total to DOH/Tallahasee
178 GRAND TOTAL calls w/ health complaints/concerns.

At this time, of the 178 calls received, 8 have been lost to follow up and 17 do meet DOH criteria for case definition (that is, these calls are not considered to be a pesticide illness case - either there was no exposure, symptoms are inconsistent w/ case definition, etc.)

Sterile Release: We have been experiencing decreased quality in recent shipment of the steriles. We were unable to release flies anywhere on Monday, due to poor emergence rates. We are releasing flies now; however, the quality is still not where we'd like it to be. USDA has indicated that they believe there has been a change in diet, resulting in wing deformities, poor emergence rates, and lower vigor in the adults. They are continuing to work with the rearing facility in Guatemala to correct the problems. In addition to the lower emergence rate, the trapping density in Miami Springs has been low for the past several weeks, adding to the concern that the steriles are not surviving well after release. For this reason and those above, USDA has extended the release program there for another several weeks.

Umatilla

No more flies have been detected in Umatilla. Ground treatments continue in the defined treatment area. There are 5520 traps deployed in the Umatilla program: 3956 Jacksons, 208 McPhails, 1303 yellow panels, and 53 IPTs.

Environmental Monitoring: The following results are from samples collected 6/13 following the seventh and final aerial bait treatment:

Enola BDL
Umatilla BDL
Gibson 0.4 ppb
So Twin BDL
East BDL
Bay 1.2 ppb
Yale 0.5 ppb
Crescent 0.1 - 0.3 ppb (between the MDL of 0.1 ppb and the PQL of 0.3 ppb)
Palm 6.1 ppb
Geneva 1.2 ppb
All samples were BDL for malaoxon
As before, the minimum detection limit (MDL) for malathion and malaoxon is 0.1 ppb; and the practical quantitation limit (PQL) for both compounds is 0.3 ppb.

Health Monitoring: No report

Note: FDACS has completed our environmental monitoring for Umatilla. USDA will continue to take limited environmental samples associated with the ground bait treatments, however those results will not be available until after the completion of those applications. Also, there have been no reports of adverse health effects to Lake CHD in several weeks. For these reasons, I'll be dropping Umatilla as a daily report - but will continue to report any significant events that may occur.
