07/20/98 - Sebring Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Report Dated 07/20/98
Sebring
While I don't have a fly count for today, folks on the project indicate that so far, additional fly finds have been relatively small (single digit), and all within the core - thus, NOT requiring an expansion of the treatment area. The last official count I have was for Thursday, at 111. I believe several more were found Friday, but don't have details. Traps continue to be deployed.
Some good news on the funding front. Senator Bob Graham proposed an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill last week, which added $2 million to the USDA/APHIS fruit fly exclusion and detection budget. The amendment was adopted Wednesday and passed on Thursday night. Thanks, Sen. Graham! Prevention is critical, and these funds are greatly appreciated.
A map of the regulated (quarantine) area is attached. This is NOT the treatment area - that was sent out last week.
