07/22/98 - Sebring Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Report Dated 07/21/98
Sebring
Fly count: Another fly was picked up today, bringing the total to 115 since the first detection on July 9th. The latest find is a single male, caught in a Calamondin tree, about five miles south of the current treatment area, at the intersection of highways 66 and 27. EPA had previously approved the additional treatment for flies caught outside the core - to host material in a 1/2 mile radius in groves and/or 200 meter radius for flies trapped in residential areas. Traps will be increased from the existing levels to 100/square mile around this fly, and working outward in square mile increments as done previously. As we get additional traps deployed and read, we will be in a better position to determine exactly what this means as regards treatment - whether by air or ground; how large an area; if this treatment area will handled separately, or will be conjoined with the northern block, etc.
Traps: There are 3012 traps deployed around the northern block: 2063 Jacksons, 176 McPhails, and 473 yellow panel traps.
Treatment: Ground crews continue to apply bait treatment to the buffer areas around sensitive sites in the northern block. Also in use for the first time is an ATV (all terrain vehicle) which will allow greater access to the more remote or otherwise less accessible areas.
Environmental Monitoring: Results pending.
Health Monitoring: No report.
