Report Dated 07/22/98
Traps: There are currently 3278 traps deployed in a 207 square mile survey area: 2525 Jacksons, 176 McPhails, and 577 yellow panel traps.
Treatment: Ground crews continued to apply bait treatment to the buffer areas in the northern block, and to the 1/2 square mile area in commercial groves around the southern find.
My understanding is that USDA has submitted an approval request to EPA for aerial bait treatment to the 9 square mile block surrounding the southern fly find. I am attaching a bitmap file of the proposed 9 square mile treatment area. As before, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and Department of Health (DOH) have assisted in determining sensitive sites for exclusion. Also excluded are the areas in which ground crews have treated. I do not have specifics on the treatment date - but understand that it would occur Saturday, immediately following the treatment of the northern block. Two helicopters will used, it should take about two hours to complete this block. Again, this is pending approval by EPA. The public was notified in yesterday's media of the program's intent.
I'll confirm the specifics on when (both date and time), as soon as the information is available. A meeting with growers in the regulated area was held today, to provide information on quarantine regulations.
Environmental Monitoring: As part of our monitoring program, weekly samples of both the malathion bulk tank (product formulation sample), and the malathion-bait mixture (bait mixture) are taken just prior to that day's bait treatment. Results from last weeks samples (first treatment):
BDL = Below detectable limit
| 7-18-98 | product formulation | malathion | 96.8 % |
| malaoxon | BDL | ||
| isomalathion | 0.17 % |
The minimum detection level (MDL) for malaoxon in this formulation is 100 ppm. The results are consistent with the registered product formulation.
| 7-18-98 | bait mixture | malathion | 19.7 % |
(Target mixture is 20% malathion)
Health Monitoring: No report.
