Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

Report Dated 07/28/98

Sebring

Fly count: Another fly was found in the central core of the northern block on Sunday, bringing the total count to 118, since the original fly was trapped on July 9th. The treatment area and the quarantine area remain unchanged.

Traps: As of Friday 3935 traps were deployed in the area: 3175 Jackson, 7 Cue Lure, 176 McPhail, and 577 yellow panel traps.

Treatment: Ground crews continue to apply bait treatment to host materials in the buffered zones surrounding sensitive sites.

Environmental Monitoring: The following are the results from the drift cards samples taken during the first treatment on July 18:

Malaoxon was not detected in any sample.
The MDLs (method detection limit) for malathion and malaoxon are 1 and 2 ug (micrograms) respectively.
The PQLs (practical level of quantification) for malathion and malaoxon are: 2 and 3 ug respectively.

(NOTE: In this program, drift cards are used to qualitatively assess the effectiveness of the buffer. The cards are placed in a line from the waters edge extending 50 to 100 meters into the treatment area. Cards are placed just prior to the treatment, and collected afterwards. Staff attempt to place cards in a open, unobstructed area at 50 meter intervals, working in a straight line from water's edge into the treated area. Water samples are taken at the same site after the treatment to provide quantitative information on the amount of malathion reaching the lake, stream, etc. being monitored.)

Health monitoring: An additional three calls with health concerns were received on Saturday by the Department of Health (DOH)/Highlands County, for a total of four calls since the program began. One of these calls does not meet the DOH case definition of a pesticide-related illness. DOH/Tallahassee is following up on the remaining three.
