Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

Report Dated 08/03/98

Sebring

Fly count: Three flies were picked up Friday, July 31st, and one more yesterday (August 2) bringing the total to 122 flies since the original detection on July 9. This does not change the size of the treatment area or the regulated (quarantine) area.

Traps: There are 4383 traps deployed in the area: 3402 Jackson, 264 McPhails, and 717 panel traps.

Treatment: The third treatment for the northern block and second treatment for the southern block took place Saturday, beginning at first light and finishing shortly after noon. One helicopter had a malfunctioning GPS antenna, and remained grounded until a replacement part was brought in. Ground crews continue to treat buffered areas around sensitive sites.

Environmental Monitoring: The following results are from Fyfanon formulation (Formulation) and the malathion-bait mixture samples taken prior to last week's treatment:
July 25, 1998: malathion malaoxon isomalathion
Formulation 96.3% BDL 0.16
These findings are in compliance with product specifications
Malathion bait 19.5% malathion
NOTE: Fed Ex failed to deliver ("lost") our set of pre-treatment samples for this last application, consequently, when they arrived at the lab this morning, they were no longer on ice. Therefore, the samples set will be discarded, and we will have no pre-treatment results to report out. Post treatment samples arrived on schedule, and analysis is in process. These will be reported as soon as results are available.

Last week, Highlands Lake Watch reported a number of dead mussels (Corbucila - hoping my nomenclature and spelling are correct!) in Lake Sebring. USDA/FDACS/DEP are investigating the incident to determine if malathion is implicated. Tissue samples were collected for analysis at the USDA lab.

This species was only observed in Lake Sebring. A second species, Elliptio buckleyi, has been observed in two other monitored lakes, and thus far, no adverse effects have been noted.

Health monitoring: Department of Health (DOH) received another health related call Friday, bringing the total as of Friday to 6. One call came in to DOH/Highlands on Saturday, however, it was not a health-related call.
