09/01/98 - Sebring Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Report Dated 09/01/98

Sebring

Fly count: The total count for the Sebring area is 134, since the first detection on July 9th. The last fly was trapped on August 10th.

Treatment: The seventh aerial bait treatment was completed Saturday, August 29th. Weather conditions were favorable, with minimal winds. During the course of the application one pilot on one run over Grassy Pond inadvertently depressed the "pump" button on his spray control. In order for application to occur, he must depress the "spray" button. Although no bait material was released, the GPS flight recorder will indicate treatment over the pond on this particular swath. The pilot informed airport staff immediately of the situation.

The next and final treatment is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 1998, pending consultation with EPA. My understanding is that program directors are seeking an eighth treatment, based on the date of the last fly find, unfavorable weather conditions (heavy rains) in the earlier part of the program, and other factors.

Traps: No report.

Environmental Monitoring: The following results are from samples collected 8/22/98 representing post-treatment samples associated with the sixth treatment event.

malathion
Lake Sebring 0.65 ppb
Dinner Lake 4.4 ppb
Little Red Water 9.0 ppb
Denton Lake 0.53 ppb
Little Lk Bonnet 0.39 ppb

All samples were BDL for malaoxon.

The method detection limit (MDL) and practical quantitation limit (PQL) for both malathion and malaoxon remain unchanged at 0.1 ppb and 0.3 ppb respectively.

Results from samples associated with the seventh aerial treatment are pending.

Health Monitoring: Department of Health (DOH) has received a total of 14 health related calls since the program began. Of these, 1 is classified as "not a case"; 6 as "unlikely" cases; 4 as "possible" cases; 2 as "probable" cases; and 1 has been lost to follow up. These are tentative classifications, and could change with additional information. Please refer to the 08-13-98 update for a brief discussion of the case classification system.
