09/08/98 - Sebring Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Report Dated 09/08/98

Sebring

Treatment: The eighth and final aerial bait treatment took place Saturday, on schedule. Treatment concluded in the late morning. DACS staff noted some hits on the drift card data at the two sites being monitored; however, there were no indications that buffers were not observed. Analytical data should be available later this week.

Environmental Monitoring: Formulation (registered product) samples from the sixth and seventh treatments results:

8/21 Malathion: 97.2% Malaoxon: BDL Isomalathion: 0.17%
8/28 Malathion: 97.7% Malaoxon: BDL Isomalathion: 0.17%

Bait mix sample results are still pending, due to complications with instruments. Staff are working to resolve the situation, and I'll report those as soon as available.

Health Monitoring: No report.

Sterile Release: My latest understanding on the issue of sterile fly release is that we will be following up with steriles in Sebring, after eradication is declared. As we've mentioned previously - a number of factors go into the consideration - distribution of flies, number caught, environmental factors that may affect treatment efficacy, amount and type of host material present, trapping efficiency, cost, etc. In this case, with the amount of desireable host material in the area, and the rain associated with several of the treatments, program directors feel the use of steriles will prevent a population going undetected over the winter months and popping out next spring.
